August Lawn Care Schedule

August Lawn Care Schedule

You may have already performed maintenance on your lawn during the summer, but there are still some things you can do to help your lawn recuperate and flourish during the hottest time of the year. Take a look at our lawn care tips for the month of August below.

August St. Augustine Grass Fertilizer Program

Use 6-1-11 with 7% Fe (iron) on your St. Augustine between August 1st–15th. The iron serves to produce green color without creating unnecessary top growth late in the season, which is not encouraged because new growth may not survive the summer heat.

We also recommend applying 0-0-7 Acelepryn which is a fertilizer combined with an insecticide that works to control grub worms, fall armyworms and other insects that are active at this time. Make an application of 0-0-7 Acelepryn somewhere between the dates of August 15th–August 31st.

These fertilizer recommendations can be applied to most St. Augustines including Palmetto® and Tamstar St. Augustine, which are sold at various Carolina Fresh Farms locations.
Check out our St. Augustine care guide here for more details about St. Augustine maintenance.

August Zoysia Grass Fertilizer Program

At the beginning of August (roughly before August 15th), fertilizer applications should be made with a 6-1-11 with 7% Fe (iron) fertilizer to enhance green color without flushing top growth late in the season. Top growth is not encouraged at this time because your grass is under a lot of stress from the heat that new growth may not be able to withstand.

We also recommend applying 0-0-7 Acelepryn which is a fertilizer combined with an insecticide that works to control grub worms, fall armyworms and other insects that are active at this time. Make an application of 0-0-7 Acelepryn somewhere between the dates of August 15th–August 31st.

Use these same fertilizer recommendations for any type of zoysia including Carolina Fresh Farms’ Palisades, Chisholm and Royal Zoysia
Check out our zoysia care guide here for more details about zoysia maintenance.

August Bermuda Grass Fertilizer Program

Between August 7th and August 21st, make an application of 25-0-25 EXPO. Any type of bermuda, including our 419 Bermuda, will benefit from this summer fertilizer program.

Apply 0-0-7 Acelepryn, a fertilizer combined with an insecticide. This product works to control grub worms, fall armyworms and other insects that are active at this time. Make an application of 0-0-7 Acelepryn somewhere between the dates of August 15th–August 31st.
Check out our bermuda care guide here for more details about bermuda maintenance.

August Fescue Fertilizer Program

Cool season grasses including fescues shouldn’t need regular fertilizer applications at this time.

However, you can still apply 0-0-7 Acelepryn. 0-0-7 Acelepryn is a fertilizer combined with an insecticide.
This product works to control grub worms, fall armyworms and other insects that are active at this time. Make an application of 0-0-7 Acelepryn somewhere between the dates of August 15th–August 31st.

August Centipede Fertilizer Program

Between the dates of July 1st–August 1st, centipede lawns should be fertilized with a 6-1-11 7% Fe fertilizer. This fertilizer is a great option because it will make your lawn rich in color so that it remains lush and green for the rest of the summer season.

0-0-7 Acelepryn, however, should be applied between August 15th–August 31st. 0-0-7 Acelepryn is a fertilizer combined with an insecticide that works to control grub worms, fall armyworms and other insects that are active at this time.

This fertilizer program can be used on Common Centipede. Check out our centipede care guide here for more information about centipede maintenance.

August Disease Control

In addition to fertilizer applications, it’s a good idea to start preparing for upcoming fungicide applications as we enter mid to late summertime. Make preventative fungicide applications for warm season lawns including St. Augustine, zoysia, bermuda and centipede grass between the dates of August 15th–September 15th. Carolina Fresh Farms carries Headway, Eagle, Armada, and Pillar G fungicides that will help prevent lawn disease.

Armada 50 WDG is available in water-dispersible granules, necessitating their blending with water and subsequent application through a backpack sprayer. You also have the option of utilizing granular products such as Headway, Eagle, and Pillar, which require even distribution using an appropriate spreader.

It can be beneficial to periodically switch between these products to prevent the development of resistance in diseases against a specific fungicide and to avoid exposing the disease to a single treatment repeatedly. In certain cases, a second application of fungicide may be necessary. Typically, fungicides maintain their effectiveness in the soil for approximately 21–28 days. If your lawn has previously experienced a disease outbreak, pathogens may still be present in the soil, especially if there has been prolonged rainfall within the initial 21–28 days. If rainfall has been scarce, the fungicide’s efficacy may persist for a longer duration.

If you suspect disease in your lawn, refrain from fertilizing it with nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrogen not only feeds your grass—it will feed the disease as well. The turfgrass may expand and cause more damage as a result of nitrogen fertilizer applications.

For more information about disease control, refer to our care guides and select your grass type. You can also contact us or drop by your local Carolina Fresh Farms outlet.

Soil Samples for Cool Season Grasses

August 1st–September 1st is a great time to collect and send in soil samples for fescue and other cool season grasses. It’s recommended that you collect a soil sample at least once a year to keep a well-maintained lawn and garden. Be sure to collect soil samples around the same time every year for more consistent results. Try to refrain from collecting a soil sample when the ground is wet or recently fertilized.
