As cooler temperatures approach, those of us with hardscape features like patios, walkways, retaining walls and driveways should prepare for cold temperatures or even snow and ice, which can damage even the most well-constructed hardscape if it isn’t properly maintained.
Below are essential winter preparation tips for hardscape care to help safeguard your landscape.
1. Clean Your Hardscape Thoroughly
Before the first freeze, remove dirt, leaves, moss and other organic debris that can trap moisture or cause staining.
- Tip: Use a pressure washer for deep cleaning.
2. Inspect and Repair Joints
Loose or missing joint sand can allow water to seep beneath the surface, freeze and cause shifting or cracking.
- Tip: Refill joints with polymeric sand before winter hits to lock pavers in place and reduce weed and insect intrusion.
3. Seal Pavers and Retaining Walls
Seal surfaces with a high-quality protective sealant before winter. This helps prevent water from seeping into cracks, freezing, expanding and causing damage. Check old seals for wear and reapply if needed.

4. Avoid Harmful Deicers
Traditional rock salt (sodium chloride) can deteriorate paver surfaces and corrode joints. Opt for plant-safe, chloride-free alternatives.
- Tip: Apply sparingly and use a calcium magnesium acetate-based deicer for minimal impact on hardscapes.
- Bonus: Apply a sealer beforehand to help repel stains from deicing products.
5. Address Drainage Issues
Standing water that freezes and thaws repeatedly is the leading cause of hardscape heaving and cracking.
- Tip: Ensure your yard’s grading is correct and install proper drainage systems where needed.
